Chicago, IL – Strong winds are expected to sweep across northern Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana Sunday evening, potentially causing travel disruptions and power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. to midnight CDT Sunday for counties including Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, and La Salle. A second advisory begins at 6 p.m. for the Chicago metro area and extends into northwest Indiana, including Lake and Porter Counties.
Forecasters report sustained west winds between 20 to 35 mph with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. High-profile vehicles could face hazardous driving conditions, particularly on north-to-south roadways. Residents in affected areas—from Rockford to Joliet, and eastward to Gary and Valparaiso—are urged to secure outdoor objects to prevent wind damage.
Tree limbs may be blown down, and scattered power outages are possible. Localized debris and reduced visibility on roads may also pose hazards during the evening commute.
Motorists, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution. Officials recommend delaying travel where possible and remaining indoors during peak wind activity.
The advisory remains in effect until 12 a.m. Monday, March 24.
