Chicago, IL – Gusty winds and dry air are creating an elevated fire weather risk across northern Illinois today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago. The alert remains in effect from late Sunday morning through the afternoon, with strong winds expected to increase fire spread potential and cause blowing dust in open areas.
According to the NWS, any grass, brush, or field fire that ignites could spread rapidly under these conditions. Southwest winds are forecast to gust up to 30 mph, mainly affecting east-west rural roads near farm fields where visibility may be reduced by blowing dust.
The weather service advises residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could generate sparks, such as welding or using equipment with open flames. Motorists are also urged to use caution when driving through dusty areas, as visibility could drop suddenly.
The fire risk and blowing dust are expected to diminish by early evening as winds gradually ease. However, forecasters caution that continued dry weather could prolong elevated fire danger into the week ahead.
