Chicago, Illinois – Isolated thunderstorms could drench parts of northeast Illinois this afternoon, with gusty winds and torrential downpours threatening travel from Chicago through Joliet and Kankakee until 8 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storms are likely to stay scattered within a green-shaded area stretching from the city into the south and east suburbs. While many locations will remain dry, any storm that does develop may quickly drop heavy rain, leading to localized flooding and slowed commutes. Gusty winds are also possible, which could down small branches or scatter loose outdoor items.
Communities at greatest risk include Joliet, Kankakee, Paxton, and Valparaiso, where brief but intense storms may impact evening plans or outdoor activities. Drivers are urged to use caution on highways like I-57 and I-55, where sudden downpours could reduce visibility and cause standing water. Residents should move indoors if thunder is heard and secure outdoor furniture to prevent wind damage.
Most storms will track northeast at about 20 mph, ending by late evening. Stay tuned for updates, as another round of summer storms can’t be ruled out later this week.
