Chicago, Illinois – Scattered showers and gusty winds are expected to disrupt travel across northern Illinois through Tuesday morning, especially along and north of Interstate 80.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, periods of rain will begin Monday night and continue through early Wednesday, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Winds will increase overnight and peak Tuesday with gusts up to 40 mph, primarily north of I-80. Temperatures will vary widely across the state, ranging from the mid-50s near Lake Michigan to the low 70s further inland and south.

Cities including Rockford, Waukegan, and Elgin may see cooler highs in the 50s due to persistent easterly winds, while Springfield and Champaign could hit the low 70s. Wet conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute on I-55, I-88, and I-80 corridors.

Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and high wind. Keep electronic devices charged and secure loose outdoor items. Showers or drizzle may linger into Wednesday, especially near the lakefront.

Winds and cooler temperatures will persist into midweek. Additional advisories may be issued as the pattern evolves.
