Chicago, Illinois – Blustery winds and temperatures stuck in the 30s near Lake Michigan through the Friday morning commute are slowing travel along Lake Shore Drive and impacting transit across the city.
Wind-driven chill is keeping conditions sharply colder along the lakefront compared to inland neighborhoods, where highs reach 38 to 46 degrees by afternoon. Gusts are pushing drivers on exposed roads and bridges, especially along I-90/94 and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, where reduced vehicle control and slower traffic are likely through midday.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, the cold, breezy pattern holds through Saturday, with highs only reaching the upper 40s to near 50 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Winds ease slightly Saturday but remain noticeable, continuing to affect elevated roadways and north-south routes.
Conditions shift by Sunday as temperatures climb into the upper 50s and low 60s, though breezy conditions persist. By Monday, a significant warmup pushes highs into the upper 60s to upper 70s across northern Illinois, with cooler readings lingering along the immediate lakefront.
By Tuesday, temperatures surge into the 70s and low 80s inland, bringing a 50 to 60 percent chance of thunderstorms that could disrupt evening travel, including along I-55, I-88, and at O’Hare and Midway airports.
Drivers should allow extra time today, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for changing conditions early next week as storms enter the region. Additional updates and advisories are expected as Tuesday’s system approaches.
