Chicago, Illinois – Severe storms could rapidly develop across northern Illinois Thursday afternoon, with the highest tornado risk building between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, several waves of thunderstorms are expected, with the most intense storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail. The greatest threat is focused along and west of Interstate 39, including Rockford, Ottawa, and parts of the Quad Cities region, though storms could extend toward the Chicago metro later in the evening.
Temperatures climbing into the upper 60s to mid-70s will help fuel instability, while strong winds aloft may support rotating storms. Storm motion is expected to push northeast at 45 to 55 mph, meaning conditions could deteriorate quickly with little warning.
Heavy rainfall and small hail are also possible tonight ahead of the main severe threat, with lingering storm chances continuing into Thursday night.
Looking ahead, additional rounds of storms are possible Friday evening and into Saturday, extending the period of active weather across the region.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to act quickly if severe weather develops.
