Rockford, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could face near-whiteout conditions starting Sunday evening as strong winds combine with accumulating snow to sharply reduce visibility across the Rockford region.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday evening for Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, and Lee counties. Snowfall totals may exceed 4 inches while northwesterly wind gusts could top 45 mph, powerful enough to blow snow across highways and cut visibility below a quarter mile.
The greatest impacts are expected across Rockford, Belvidere, Rochelle, Oregon, Byron, and Dixon. Open stretches of Interstate 90 near Rockford and rural highways across the Stateline region may experience sudden whiteout conditions as winds push snow across roadways.
Hazardous travel may persist throughout Monday as blowing snow continues even after the heaviest snowfall ends. Falling temperatures could also allow snow to stick quickly on untreated roads and bridges.
Residents should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, secure loose outdoor items, and consider delaying non-essential travel if conditions deteriorate. Officials warn additional advisories or upgrades may follow as the storm strengthens heading into the start of the workweek.
