Rockford, Illinois – Strong wind gusts up to 40 mph are whipping loose snow across northern Illinois Monday, creating blowing snow and sudden visibility drops even as the region’s Blizzard Warning has been canceled.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Monday for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, and DeKalb counties. While snowfall totals will remain light — generally less than one inch of additional accumulation — scattered snow showers and strong winds are expected to keep travel conditions hazardous.
Cities impacted include Rockford, Belvidere, Crystal Lake, Woodstock, DeKalb, Rochelle, Dixon, and Oregon. Gusty winds will continue to blow snow across roadways, reducing visibility and creating slick patches on untreated surfaces.
Drivers along Interstate 90 near Rockford, U.S. 20 through DeKalb County, and Illinois Route 47 near Woodstock could encounter brief whiteout conditions where winds push snow across open rural areas.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, particularly on bridges and overpasses where surfaces can freeze quickly.
The advisory remains in effect through the late afternoon Monday, with winds gradually easing later in the day as snow showers taper across northern Illinois.
