Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could wake up to slick highways and blowing snow Monday morning as gusty winds push a round of overnight snowfall into the Chicago metro area.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory begins at 10 p.m. Sunday and continues until 1 p.m. Monday for counties across northern Illinois, including Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, La Salle, and DeKalb.
Snow totals are expected to range between 1 and 3 inches, but winds gusting up to 45 mph could blow snow across roads and reduce visibility during the overnight hours and early commute. The strongest impacts are likely along major corridors including Interstates 90, 94, 88, and 290, where drifting snow and slick pavement could slow traffic.
Suburban communities such as Naperville, Aurora, Elgin, Crystal Lake, Schaumburg, Waukegan, and DeKalb may see rapidly changing road conditions overnight into Monday morning. Bridges and overpasses will be especially prone to icing as temperatures drop.
Gusty winds may also snap small tree limbs and scatter debris, adding additional hazards along residential streets.
Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Illinois travelers can check real-time road conditions at gettingaroundillinois.com before heading out.
Snow and blowing snow may linger into late Monday morning, with the advisory remaining in place until 1 p.m. Monday as the system gradually moves east.
