Chicago, Illinois – Damaging winds, flash flooding, and isolated tornadoes threaten northern Illinois Friday afternoon and evening as a powerful storm system sweeps through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Level 3 out of 5 severe weather risk has been issued for areas north of I-80 and west of I-55. The most dangerous window for thunderstorms is from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. CDT, when scattered storms could intensify rapidly, bringing hail up to 1.5 inches, gusts over 70 mph, and brief tornadoes.

Cities in the higher-risk zone include DeKalb, Ottawa, Dixon, Joliet, and parts of Chicago’s western suburbs. Flooding is a top concern in areas where storms dropped heavy rainfall Thursday—especially along rivers and in low-lying areas. A Flood Watch is in effect, and roads could become impassable by nightfall.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel, especially during peak storm hours, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Charge mobile devices, secure outdoor items, and never walk or drive through flooded roads.

Storms may linger through late evening, with additional warnings likely depending on track and intensity.
