Chicago, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms are moving across northern Illinois this evening, with severe weather possible in parts of the Chicago metro through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Residents west of the Fox Valley, including Rockford, Ottawa, and Aurora, could see damaging winds and large hail as storms intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the strongest cells may produce hail capable of denting vehicles and winds strong enough to down tree limbs and power lines. Lightning and brief, localized downpours are also expected, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas.

The greatest severe threat lies stretching from Rockford to Joliet and into the western suburbs of Chicago. Areas including Waukegan, Gary, and Watseka are also under a broad thunderstorm risk, though severe conditions may be more isolated.

Drivers are urged to stay off the roads during heavy rainfall, and anyone hearing thunder should move indoors immediately. Keep mobile devices charged and ensure multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

The storm system is tracking east-northeast at 15 to 20 mph. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued this evening if conditions worsen.
