Chicago, IL – A powerful early-season snow surge has buried parts of northern Illinois under more than 15 inches of snow in just nine days, matching or exceeding the snowfall totals recorded during the entire 2024–2025 winter season.

According to the National Weather Service, both Chicago and Rockford have officially measured 17.1 inches of snow through Saturday, with 15.4 inches falling in Chicago and 15.9 inches in Rockford since late November. It’s the fastest start to winter in decades — the quickest since 1978 for Chicago, and a record-breaking pace for Rockford going back to 1905.

The intensity and consistency of the snow have led to slick road conditions, flight delays at O’Hare, and plow crews working overtime to keep highways and side streets passable. IDOT is urging drivers to avoid non-essential travel during active snow hours and to give crews extra space on the road.

Travel across northern Illinois remains impacted, with plows working around the clock and secondary roads still slick in spots. Drivers are urged to use caution and allow extra time, especially in suburban and rural areas.

Sidewalks and secondary roads remain icy, and cold temperatures in the 20s and low 30s are preventing much melting. Snow chances return Monday, and forecasters warn that this active pattern could last through mid-December.
