CHICAGO, Ill. – Northern Illinois faces a volatile mix of extreme heat and potentially dangerous storms late Saturday, with the most intense weather possible west of the Fox Valley between 4 and 9 p.m. Damaging winds capable of snapping tree limbs and heavy rainfall that could trigger flash flooding are the top concerns, especially for areas along and west of Interstate 55.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, peak afternoon heat indices could reach or exceed 100° before the storms arrive, creating uncomfortable and potentially hazardous outdoor conditions. While all thunderstorms could bring torrential rainfall and gusty winds, the strongest storms may produce isolated flooding on roads and low-lying areas.

Forecasters expect storms to weaken as they track east toward Chicago tonight, but gusty outflow winds could still impact the city and lakeshore. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Storm chances remain through early next week, with daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible. Additional watches or warnings could be issued if storms strengthen.
