Chicago, IL – Streets, underpasses, and low-lying areas from Joliet to Gary could flood quickly this afternoon as slow-moving storms drench the region. A Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight for much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, with rainfall rates possibly reaching 2 inches per hour.
According to the National Weather Service, storms developing this afternoon and evening could repeatedly track over the same areas, rapidly overwhelming storm drains and small creeks. The watch covers DuPage, Cook, and Will counties in Illinois, along with Lake County in Indiana. Urban surfaces and already wet soils from recent rains will increase runoff and flood risk.
Forecasters warn that fast-rising water may block roads and strand vehicles, especially under viaducts and in poor-drainage neighborhoods. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded streets and seek alternate routes. Residents should prepare to move to higher ground if water begins to rise and keep emergency alerts enabled on their devices.
The heaviest rain is expected to taper off late tonight, but lingering showers are possible Wednesday. Additional watches may be issued if storms redevelop later this week.
