Waukegan, IL – Lake County health officials are urging residents to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 ahead of the holiday season to help prevent illness at family gatherings.

According to the Lake County Health Department, it takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop after vaccination. That means anyone planning to be protected by Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas should receive their shots well in advance.

For flu vaccines, the department recommends getting vaccinated by October 17 to be protected for Halloween, November 13 for Thanksgiving, and December 11 for Christmas. COVID-19 vaccinations follow the same timeline, with full protection expected about two weeks after the required doses are completed.

“Getting vaccinated now helps ensure you and your loved ones are healthy when families gather this holiday season,” the department stated in a public advisory. Vaccinations are available at local doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and community health clinics.

The guidance comes as colder weather and indoor gatherings increase the risk of seasonal illness spread. Public health officials emphasize that staying up to date with vaccines not only protects individuals but also helps reduce strain on local healthcare systems.

Residents are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or pharmacy to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
