Chicago, IL – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to soak northern Illinois and northwest Indiana through tonight, prompting a Flood Watch across more than a dozen counties including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and Will. Urban flooding and rapid rises along creeks and streams are possible into early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour are possible, with isolated totals exceeding 5 inches where storms repeatedly track. Saturated ground from recent rainfall means it will take little additional water for flooding to occur, particularly in Chicago, Rockford, Aurora, and Joliet.

Low-lying roadways, underpasses, and poor drainage areas are most at risk for flooding tonight. In Cook and DuPage counties, officials warn of widespread street flooding during the evening commute. Northwest Indiana, including Gary and Valparaiso, could also see flash flooding as storms push east.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, and residents should move vehicles to higher ground. Power outages and delays in transit services may also occur if storms persist overnight.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight, with additional advisories possible if rainfall totals climb higher.
