Chicago, IL – Millions across northern Illinois remain under a severe thunderstorm watch through 2 a.m. CDT Saturday, as dangerous storms threaten the region with damaging winds, large hail, and a potential tornado risk. The National Weather Service warns that gusts up to 80 mph and hail as large as two inches in diameter could impact communities from Chicago to Rockford, as well as parts of eastern Iowa.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers an area with more than 10 million residents, including major metro areas such as Chicago, Rockford, and Kankakee. The storm system could produce isolated tornadoes, creating an added danger for those in its path.
Residents in affected areas should remain alert and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. The severe weather threat is expected to peak Friday evening into the early hours of Saturday. Strong winds may lead to power outages, and large hail could cause damage to vehicles and property.
Travelers should exercise caution, as high winds and possible debris may create hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service advises residents to seek shelter indoors during severe storms and stay tuned to local forecasts for updates on the evolving situation.
