Chicago, IL – Illinois residents should prepare for snow showers, freezing drizzle, and bitter cold as winter weather intensifies this week. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts snow showers developing tonight, tapering to flurries and freezing drizzle by early Thursday.

According to the NWS, snow accumulations of up to one inch are expected in northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana by morning. Roads may become slippery, particularly during pre-dawn hours Thursday. Temperatures will briefly moderate Thursday and Friday before plummeting to sub-zero wind chills by Sunday.

A rain-and-snow mix is expected Friday night into Saturday, primarily southeast of I-55. Snow showers will become more widespread after midnight and taper off early Saturday. Lake-effect snow may linger across Porter County, Indiana, into Saturday morning.

Blustery conditions will dominate the weekend as temperatures drop sharply. By Sunday, wind chills could fall below -20°F, with highs barely reaching the single digits. The NWS warns residents to take precautions against the extreme cold and plan for potentially hazardous travel conditions through the weekend.

As the cold front advances, residents should monitor weather updates and prepare emergency kits. Avoid unnecessary travel during icy conditions and dress in layers to stay warm outdoors.
