Rockford, IL. – Creeks may overflow and roads could flood across northern Illinois as torrential rain moves through the region Friday afternoon and evening. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with localized rainfall totals topping 4 inches in some spots.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, strong thunderstorms are expected to redevelop through the evening, especially in Boone, Winnebago, Ogle, and Lee counties. Rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, leading to dangerous flash flooding—particularly in areas that were already soaked Thursday.

Drivers in Rockford, Dixon, and Belvidere should watch for water-covered streets, especially in low-lying areas or near creeks like the Kishwaukee and Rock rivers. Urban neighborhoods and poor drainage zones are most at risk.

Residents are urged to stay off flooded roadways, charge devices in case of power loss, and monitor weather alerts. Water can rise rapidly, and even a few inches can sweep away a vehicle.

Rain is expected to taper late Friday night, but additional alerts may be issued if storms linger or redevelop. Stay tuned to local updates and be prepared to act quickly.
