Denver, Colorado – High heat and gusty winds are slamming Colorado’s eastern plains Wednesday, while the mountains brace for afternoon thunderstorms and scattered showers.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, strong south winds of 30 to 40 mph will develop across the plains by early afternoon, pushing temperatures into the mid-to-upper 90s from Fort Morgan to Limon. Sterling and Akron could hit 97°F, with dry conditions increasing wildfire danger. Meanwhile, the high terrain, including areas west of Boulder and Colorado Springs, may see pop-up thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Windy conditions will impact I-70 east of Denver, especially between Bennett and Limon, where crosswinds may affect high-profile vehicles. Outdoor plans across the plains should be adjusted for extreme heat and potential power strain. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and secure loose objects.

Storm chances in the high country bring brief relief but also the risk of lightning and sudden downpours. This pattern mirrors early July trends from previous years, with brief but intense heatwaves following monsoon moisture.

Conditions will ease slightly after sunset, but advisories may continue into Thursday depending on wind strength.
