Caribou, ME – The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Special Weather Statement warning that icy road conditions are developing overnight across much of northern and coastal Maine, including Hancock and Washington counties.

According to the NWS, light snow earlier this evening left roads wet, and with temperatures now at or below freezing, those surfaces are beginning to ice over. Communities including Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Machias, Cherryfield, Bangor, and Houlton could experience slick and hazardous travel conditions through the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 12.

Motorists are urged to reduce speeds, allow extra braking distance, and use caution, especially on bridges and shaded roads that may freeze first. The icing risk is expected to continue through daybreak, before improving later in the morning as temperatures gradually rise above freezing.

No widespread accumulation is expected, but patchy black ice will remain a concern for commuters and early-morning travelers.
