South Lake Tahoe, CA – A major winter storm is set to blanket the Greater Lake Tahoe area with up to two feet of snow and dangerous winds, beginning late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Monday. Snowfall totals could reach 1 to 2 feet above 6,500 feet, while lower elevations may see 5 to 10 inches. Ridge wind gusts are forecast to reach 100 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph on Lake Tahoe creating waves between 2 and 3 feet.

The storm will significantly impact travel across mountain passes, especially along U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 80, where whiteout conditions may develop. Monday’s morning and evening commutes are likely to be severely delayed or canceled due to heavy snow and fallen trees.

Officials advise residents and visitors to avoid non-essential travel. Carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, if travel is unavoidable. Power outages are possible due to high winds damaging utility lines and trees.

Road updates can be obtained by calling 511 or checking Caltrans QuickMap. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential disruptions through Monday night.
