SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Beachgoers from Point Reyes to Big Sur are being urged to use caution this weekend as powerful northwest swells bring dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents to the California coast. The National Weather Service in San Francisco has issued a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through Saturday evening, warning of unpredictable sneaker waves that can surge much farther up the beach than expected.

Strong rip currents and large breaking waves are expected to affect beaches along Highway 1, including Ocean Beach, Half Moon Bay, and Monterey Bay. Officials advise staying off jetties, rocks, and driftwood and keeping a safe distance from the water’s edge. Even experienced swimmers and surfers are urged to exercise extreme caution, as waves can rise suddenly with no warning.

Despite the dangerous surf, inland areas across the Bay Area will enjoy a pleasant stretch of fall sunshine. Highs reach the mid-70s through Sunday, with clear skies and light winds making for ideal conditions for pumpkin patches, outdoor markets, and leaf viewing around Golden Gate Park and the East Bay hills.

Calmer surf and slightly cooler temperatures arrive early next week, though mild, sunny days will continue through Wednesday, marking a classic October pattern for Northern California.

Five-Day Outlook for San Francisco, California:
Friday: Sunny, high 73°F, surf hazard continues.
Saturday: Sunny, high 76°F, beach hazard through evening.
Sunday: Sunny, high 73°F, calmer surf.
Monday: Sunny, high 74°F, light breeze.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 70°F, dry and mild.
