EUREKA, Calif. – The Pacific is stirring. A deep low-pressure system west of the coast is sending both dangerous waves and incoming rain toward Northern California — a one-two punch that will make beaches hazardous today and roads slick by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Wednesday morning for Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino County beaches. Sneaker waves — sudden, powerful surges that can appear after long calm periods — are possible through midday. These waves can knock people from rocks or sweep them into the sea without warning. Beachgoers are urged to stay well back from the surf, avoid jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean.

While the surf threat eases by Thursday, attention quickly shifts to the sky. A strong Pacific front will arrive Friday, bringing steady rain and gusty south winds up to 25 mph. Showers may begin along Highway 101 by midday Friday, intensifying into Friday night. Rainfall totals could exceed an inch along coastal hills and up to half an inch in lower valleys.

Saturday remains damp, with scattered showers and brisk breezes. Temperatures will fall from the mid-60s Friday to near 56 degrees by Sunday. For those planning weekend drives or coastal events, expect periods of low visibility, wet pavement, and chilly air as the first taste of the wet season settles in.

To be fair, this isn’t a winter storm — but it’s a clear sign the storm track is back, marking Northern California’s annual shift to colder, wetter days.
