EUREKA, Calif. – After a stretch of calm and mild fall weather, northwest California will turn stormy by midweek as a strong Pacific system brings gusty winds and heavy rain. The National Weather Service in Eureka reports that the first round of significant November rain will arrive late Wednesday, with the heaviest downpours likely early Thursday.

According to the NWS, southeast winds will increase Wednesday afternoon, gusting between 35 and 55 mph along coastal headlands and ridges. Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected through Thursday, with most populated areas forecast to receive 1.5 to 3.5 inches of rain over a 48-hour span. Some localized higher totals are possible in southern Humboldt and Mendocino counties where terrain enhancement could boost rainfall rates.

Forecasters warn of an elevated risk for power outages, debris flows, and ponding on roadways—especially where leaves and runoff may clog storm drains. Caltrans urges drivers to prepare for slick travel along U.S. 101, CA-299, and coastal routes as visibility drops in heavier bands of rain and gusty crosswinds.

The storm system will move through gradually, with conditions improving by late Thursday night into Friday morning. However, lingering showers may continue into early Friday before drier air returns heading into the weekend. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, clear gutters, and have flashlights ready in case of power interruptions.

Temperatures will remain mild through the event, with highs near 60°F and overnight lows in the upper 40s. Another round of unsettled weather could follow late next weekend as the fall storm track strengthens across the Pacific Northwest.
