YREKA, Calif. – A crisp fall chill will settle into the valleys of Siskiyou County late Sunday night, bringing the season’s first widespread frost to the region. The National Weather Service office in Medford, issued by the Eureka office, said a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Monday for western and central Siskiyou County, including Yreka, Weed, Etna, and Fort Jones.

According to the Weather Service, overnight lows will dip to near 34 degrees, allowing frost to form on exposed surfaces in sheltered valleys and low-lying rural areas. The clearest and calmest spots in Scott Valley and the upper Shasta River basin will be the coldest, with potential for temperatures to briefly touch the freezing mark before sunrise.

Local agricultural officials urged residents to cover tender plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and disconnect garden hoses to prevent damage. Frost-sensitive crops and flowers could be harmed or killed if left unprotected. Drivers on U.S. Highway 97 and State Route 3 may also see light frost accumulation on bridges and windshields during the early morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, conditions will warm quickly after sunrise Monday, with daytime highs rebounding into the 60s under sunny skies. Warmer nights are expected to return by midweek.
