Eureka, Calif. – Dry thunderstorms could threaten interior Del Norte County Thursday afternoon and evening, raising the risk of new wildfires as lightning combines with gusty, erratic winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, storms are unlikely to bring much rain, with only a 10 to 15 percent chance of development. Any storms that do form will primarily produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and strong, shifting winds, conditions that can ignite and spread fires rapidly.
Eastern Del Norte County, including areas near Gasquet and along U.S. Highway 199, faces the highest concern. Fire crews remain on alert as new starts could spread quickly in dry brush. Drivers and residents should be prepared for sudden changes in wind direction, which may complicate both travel and fire suppression efforts.
Officials urge residents to postpone outdoor activities and move indoors if thunder is heard. Emergency managers stress that vehicles and sturdy buildings provide the best shelter from lightning.
The threat is expected to diminish later tonight, though fire danger will remain elevated through the weekend. Additional watches or warnings could be issued if storm chances increase.
