California wakes to the sound of steady rain tapping rooftops, with puddles spreading across streets and creeks running high near the coast. In far Northern California, saturated ground and lingering showers are already creating trouble spots as holiday travelers prepare to move again.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Flood Advisory remains in effect for portions of Humboldt County through early this morning. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain has fallen since Thursday, leading to minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water has been reported over roadways, with streams and small rivers running elevated.

Some locations near Jacoby Creek, Elk River, Hookton Slough, and areas around Humboldt Bay have seen localized flooding. In central Humboldt County, Highway 36 near Carlotta and nearby low spots have been impacted by standing water. Drivers should expect ponding on roads, reduced visibility, and sudden lane closures where water collects.

Rain tapers off later today as winds turn breezy and skies gradually brighten. Highs reach near 50, helping water drain slowly through the afternoon. Sunday and Monday look drier and calmer, offering a much-needed break for end-of-year travel across U.S. 101 and surrounding highways.

Meteorologists are already tracking the next system. Clouds increase again by midweek, with rain chances returning around Wednesday and continuing into New Year’s Day. While rainfall amounts remain uncertain, soaked ground raises sensitivity to renewed runoff and localized flooding issues.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads, especially during low light. Plan alternate routes if traveling this morning. Conditions may improve quickly, but hazards can linger longer than expected.
