Sacramento, California – Above-normal precipitation combined with near-normal temperatures may increase mountain snow chances across Northern California from Jan. 3–9.

According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 8–14 Day Outlook, much of Northern California is favored to receive above-normal precipitation during the first full week of January. Temperatures are expected to remain near seasonal averages, a setup that supports snowfall in higher elevations, particularly in the Sierra Nevada and other mountain ranges.

The outlook reflects a 33–50% probability that precipitation totals exceed early-January averages. While this long-range guidance does not identify specific storm systems, it suggests a pattern favorable for multiple precipitation events rather than a single major storm.

Snow accumulation is most likely at higher elevations, including the Sierra Nevada, southern Cascades, and portions of the Trinity Alps. Lower elevations and valleys, including the Sacramento Valley, are more likely to see rain rather than snow, though colder nighttime conditions could briefly lower snow levels during stronger systems.

Travel impacts are possible along mountain corridors such as Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 50, State Route 88, State Route 89, and State Route 36, where snow-covered roads, chain controls, and reduced visibility can develop quickly. Ski-area access, freight movement, and mountain community travel could be affected during active weather periods.

The Climate Prediction Center emphasizes that 8–14 day outlooks represent probability trends, not guaranteed outcomes. More detailed forecasts, including snow levels, snowfall amounts, and potential winter weather advisories or warnings, will be issued by the National Weather Service as individual systems come into focus.

Residents and travelers are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, check road conditions before mountain travel, and prepare for possible winter weather advisories or chain requirements as early January approaches.
