Sacramento, CA – Northern California will see above-normal temperatures and a chance of thunderstorms early this week, with the National Weather Service warning of a moderate heat risk in the Valley, Delta, and surrounding foothills.
According to the NWS Sacramento office, thunderstorms are possible Sunday night into early Monday, Sept. 22, with chances ranging from 10 to 30 percent across parts of the Sacramento Valley and northern Sierra Nevada. Residents in areas including Redding, Chico, and Yuba City may notice scattered lightning and brief rainfall.
Temperatures will rise sharply starting Monday, with highs forecast in the low to mid-90s for Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto. Red Bluff and Redding may reach the upper 90s on Tuesday before temperatures cool slightly later in the week.
The heat brings a moderate health risk, particularly for sensitive groups such as older adults, young children, and those without access to adequate cooling or hydration. The NWS advises residents to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Heat risk is expected to peak Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22–23, before easing by midweek. Despite slightly cooler conditions by Thursday and Friday, temperatures will still remain above seasonal averages.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service for changing conditions, especially as storm chances could shift in timing and intensity.
