EUREKA, Calif. – The calm along the North Coast this morning won’t last. By late Tuesday, a potent Pacific storm will slam into Northern California, bringing powerful winds, pounding surf, and heavy rainfall from the coast to the redwood ridges.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a High Wind Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning for Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties. South winds of 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, strongest along ridgelines and exposed coastal headlands. Meanwhile, steady rain will soak the region, with localized rainfall totals topping two inches by Wednesday.

Forecasters warn of downed trees, scattered power outages, and difficult travel conditions—especially for high-profile vehicles along U.S. Highway 101 and the coastal stretches of State Route 1. Drivers should use extra caution, as gusty winds and slick pavement will make for hazardous commutes through Wednesday morning.

Homes near flood-prone zones or steep terrain should prepare for runoff and possible minor flooding. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, check flashlights and backup power, and avoid wooded roads during the height of the storm.

Rain will taper briefly Thursday before another weaker system approaches Friday. While snow levels remain above 5,000 feet for now, colder air arriving mid-November could drop them closer to pass levels — a sign that early winter conditions are approaching for the Sierra and Northern California peaks.

This midweek storm marks the region’s first major rain-and-wind event of November — and a loud reminder that the Pacific storm season has arrived.
