Eureka, California – Dangerous fire conditions could escalate rapidly Tuesday as dry thunderstorms move through Northern California’s interior, prompting a Fire Weather Watch from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, there’s a 10–20% chance of dry lightning strikes across Trinity, northeastern Mendocino, and northern Lake Counties. Combined with gusty, erratic outflow winds and critically dry fuels, even a single spark could lead to rapid wildfire spread.
Officials warn that any new fire starts may quickly become uncontrolled due to low humidity and unstable wind patterns. The most vulnerable areas include rural roads, mountain passes, and forested zones, where access for fire crews could be delayed.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, delay use of power tools near dry brush, and keep emergency go-bags ready. PG&E customers in higher-risk areas may also want to charge phones and devices in case of preemptive shutoffs.
Conditions are expected to ease by late Tuesday night, but additional watches could be issued if storms linger into midweek.
