Eureka, CA – Residents along California’s far North Coast are bracing for dangerous winds this evening as a High Wind Warning remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Eureka.
Forecasters warn of south winds between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph across Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, including Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna, Hoopa, and Garberville. The most powerful gusts are expected along windward ridges, coastal headlands, and interior high terrain.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday for the coast and continue through 9 a.m. Wednesday, while interior areas remain under warning until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Officials caution that damaging winds may bring down trees and power lines, creating widespread outages and hazardous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. Drivers are urged to postpone travel when possible and avoid parking beneath trees or near unstable structures.
Emergency officials remind residents that falling branches and debris could block roadways overnight. Utility crews are preparing for potential outages, and residents are encouraged to charge devices and secure outdoor items before the storm peaks.
This powerful wind event marks one of the strongest North Coast systems so far this fall.
