Sacramento, California – Drivers heading into the Sierra Nevada could face chain controls and slick roads by tonight as a spring storm ramps up across Northern California with wind, rain, and heavy mountain snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, snow totals of 8 to 12 inches are expected along higher elevations near Donner Pass and Echo Summit through Thursday, with localized peaks exceeding a foot. Snow levels will start between 5,500 and 6,500 feet today before dropping to near 4,000 to 5,000 feet overnight, increasing impacts on key travel routes.

Winds across the Sacramento Valley will strengthen from the south-southwest, with sustained speeds of 25 to 30 mph and gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph, especially near the Sierra foothills. These winds could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles and bring down small branches.

Rainfall totals of 0.25 to 1.5 inches are expected across the region, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Cities including Sacramento, Redding, Chico, and Stockton will see periods of rain through Thursday morning.

Motorists along I-80 and Highway 50 should prepare for winter driving conditions at higher elevations. Secure loose outdoor items and allow extra travel time. Conditions improve later Thursday, but additional advisories remain possible.
