Sacramento, California – Mountain travel across Northern California could become impossible by Saturday as a powerful late-season winter storm targets the Sierra with feet of snow and strong winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday evening through Sunday evening for elevations above 4,500 feet, including Quincy, Chester, and Blue Canyon. Snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are likely, with up to 3 to 4 feet possible at the highest peaks.

The heaviest snow is expected between late Saturday morning and midday Sunday, when conditions could rapidly deteriorate. Winds may gust up to 45 mph, creating blowing snow and near-whiteout visibility on major routes like Interstate 80 and Highway 70.

Lower elevations around 4,000 feet could still see 2 to 4 inches of accumulation, especially late Saturday into Sunday as snow levels drop. This timing raises concerns for weekend travelers and anyone heading into the mountains.

Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel, carry chains, and check Caltrans QuickMap or dial 511 for real-time road conditions.

Warnings remain in place through Sunday evening, with additional advisories possible as the storm develops.
