Eureka, CA – The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for parts of Northern California, effective from late Thursday night through Friday morning. The areas affected include Southern Humboldt Interior, Southern Trinity, Northern Mendocino Interior, and Northern Lake County. The freeze watch anticipates sub-freezing temperatures potentially reaching as low as 26 degrees, posing risks to sensitive vegetation and outdoor plants.
The freeze watch will follow an initial frost advisory scheduled for early Thursday morning from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. PDT. During this period, temperatures are expected to drop to around 36 degrees, potentially leading to frost formation. However, colder and more severe conditions are forecast to develop Thursday night, with the onset of the freeze watch.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions to protect outdoor plants and vulnerable vegetation. Covering plants or bringing potted plants indoors can help mitigate the impact of the freezing temperatures. Additionally, providing shelter for outdoor pets is recommended.
The National Weather Service notes that both frost advisories and freeze watches are issued during the local growing season, as defined by local climatology and agricultural experts. Once the season concludes, such alerts will not resume until spring. Residents are encouraged to stay informed of the latest forecasts and prepare for potentially damaging cold weather conditions.
