Eureka, CA – Emergency officials in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties will conduct a tsunami preparedness drill on March 26 at 11 a.m., issuing test alerts to encourage residents to practice their earthquake and tsunami response plans.
Residents in designated tsunami hazard zones are advised to walk out of the area as part of the drill, simulating an evacuation scenario. Those outside the hazard zones do not need to evacuate but are encouraged to consider their response strategies following a major earthquake.
According to the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group, tsunami waves can persist for up to 24-48 hours after the initial event, making it crucial for residents to remain outside hazardous areas until authorities confirm it is safe to return.
Participants can register for the drill at bit.ly/NCTsunamiDrillForm to receive official updates. Additionally, residents can check whether their home or business is within a tsunami zone by visiting rctwg.humboldt.edu/tsunami-hazard-maps.
The drill is part of ongoing efforts to improve community preparedness for seismic events along the Northern California coast, a region prone to earthquakes and potential tsunami threats. Authorities urge residents to take advantage of this opportunity to review emergency plans and evacuation routes.
