Eureka, CA – The National Weather Service in Eureka has issued multiple marine advisories and warnings for Northern California waters, with hazardous conditions expected to persist through the weekend.
A Gale Warning is now in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. PDT Friday for waters from Pt. St. George to Cape Mendocino, where south winds of 20–30 knots and gusts up to 40 knots are forecast. Seas during this period are expected to build to 14–16 feet, creating dangerous conditions for mariners.
Further south, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the Cape Mendocino to Pt. Arena region until 8 p.m. PDT Saturday, followed by a Hazardous Seas Watch from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, when very large swells up to 19–20 feet are possible.
According to forecasters, these steep and powerful waves could capsize small vessels and cause damage to inadequately secured boats. Mariners are strongly urged to remain in port, alter travel plans, or seek safe harbor during the advisory periods.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Sunday as winds ease and seas subside. However, the NWS warns that dangerous residual swells may persist into early next week.
