Eureka, California – Marine conditions off Northern California will rapidly worsen Tuesday afternoon, with dangerous winds and steep waves expected to challenge vessels south of Cape Mendocino.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, northerly wind gusts will reach 35 to 40 knots by late Tuesday, accompanied by very steep waves building to 8 to 10 feet at 8-second intervals. Mariners are urged to avoid travel or delay plans, especially near Buoy 14 where gust probabilities exceed 90%.
The harshest conditions are expected south of Cape Mendocino, with combined seas reaching 13 feet by evening. These conditions could impact shipping routes, fishing vessels, and recreational boaters near Humboldt Bay and Fort Bragg.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that short-period waves at these heights can produce dangerous breaking conditions, especially near coastal inlets and shallow areas. Operators of small craft should secure vessels or remain docked until conditions improve.
Mariners should monitor NOAA marine forecasts closely, as additional warnings or updates may be issued through Tuesday night. Hazardous seas are expected to persist into early Wednesday.
