Eureka, California – Gale-force winds and hazardous seas are battering Northern California’s offshore waters from Cape Mendocino to Pt Arena, putting mariners at risk through 9 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, north winds of 20 to 30 knots—gusting up to 40 knots—are combining with steep seas of 11 to 16 feet between 10 and 60 nautical miles offshore. The Gale Warning, in effect overnight, extends across key shipping lanes and fishing grounds along the Humboldt and Mendocino County coasts.
Mariners are urged to remain in port or seek safe harbor as strong winds and rough waters could capsize vessels, cause structural damage, or reduce visibility. The warning affects recreational boaters and commercial fleets from Eureka to Fort Bragg, including routes near Shelter Cove and offshore fishing spots west of Highway 1.
Boaters should secure equipment, monitor marine radio updates, and avoid unnecessary travel until winds subside. These conditions can develop rapidly, similar to previous July gales that caused several vessel emergencies in this region.
Hazardous marine conditions are expected to gradually improve after 9 a.m. Tuesday, but further advisories may be issued if the threat continues.
