Eureka, CA – The National Weather Service in Eureka has issued a series of Flood Watches across northwest California as a strong Atmospheric River system moves into the region beginning early Tuesday morning, continuing through Wednesday morning.

The Flood Watch covers Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, and Lake counties, with periods of moderate to heavy rain expected to persist for up to 36 hours. The heaviest rainfall is forecast for coastal and interior valleys, as well as mountainous areas above 2,000 feet.

According to meteorologists, the system could trigger flooding along rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas, while rockslides and landslides remain a significant concern along steep terrain and major highways, including U.S. Highway 101, Highway 299, and Highway 20. Poor drainage areas and urban centers could also see localized street flooding.

Residents are urged to monitor forecasts closely and remain alert for possible Flood Warnings. The weather service recommends preparing for potential evacuations and avoiding travel in flood-prone or slide-risk areas.

Rainfall is expected to ease by Wednesday afternoon, though lingering runoff could continue to affect smaller streams into midweek.
