Eureka, CA – Beachgoers in Northwest California are urged to use extreme caution this week as sneaker waves pose a heightened risk along the coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a 10- to 13-foot swell will reach the coast Wednesday morning, October 1, and continue through Thursday, October 2. The highest risk areas include beaches in Humboldt and Del Norte counties, where steep summer sand buildup increases the potential for dangerous wave action.
Officials warn that sneaker waves can surge farther up beaches than expected, quickly overtaking unaware visitors. “These powerful waves can knock people off rocks, sweep them into the ocean, and create hazardous conditions along the shoreline,” the NWS said in its advisory.
The agency advises the public to stay well back from the surf, avoid climbing on rocks and jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean. Sneaker waves can also cause coastal erosion and damage, adding to the risks for both visitors and property.
The advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 3 p.m. Thursday. Travelers and residents are encouraged to monitor conditions and use extra caution if visiting local beaches.
