Eureka, CA – A calm ocean could turn dangerous this Sunday as northern California beaches face a high risk of sneaker waves from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, long-period swells paired with fair skies and light winds may create life-threatening conditions along west to northwest-facing beaches from Del Norte to Mendocino counties. Sneaker waves are known to surge farther up the beach without warning, sweeping unaware beachgoers into the ocean.

The alert emphasizes that these waves may strike after long periods of seemingly harmless surf—sometimes up to 30 minutes of small waves. NWS officials urge beach visitors to stay off rocks, jetties, and steep beach faces, and never attempt to rescue pets swept into the surf.

Sneaker waves can carry logs and debris, posing added danger by knocking over or pinning people. Cold water immersion further increases the risk of hypothermia or drowning.

Residents and tourists are advised to keep a safe distance from the shoreline, monitor local updates, and avoid distractions while near the water. The alert remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday evening.
