FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Drivers and hikers in northern Arizona should be ready for scattered thunderstorms beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into early next week, bringing lightning, brief downpours, and gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a 20 percent chance of storms will develop after 11 a.m. Thursday, with highs near 77. Storm activity increases Friday and Saturday, when winds could gust up to 15 mph and chances of rain climb to 40 percent. While most storms will be brief, heavy rain in isolated cells could reduce visibility on U.S. 89 and Interstate 40.

Weekend travelers should also prepare for cooler evenings, with lows dipping into the upper 40s. Outdoor events across Coconino County may face temporary delays due to lightning. The holiday weekend will not be a washout, but afternoon plans could be interrupted by fast-moving storms.

Labor Day Monday continues the unsettled pattern, with scattered showers possible into Tuesday. Residents are advised to monitor conditions closely and avoid exposed outdoor areas during lightning activity.

More updates may be issued if storms become stronger or more widespread into early next week.
