Flagstaff, Ariz. – Thunderstorms are expected to roll into northern Arizona starting Thursday, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and along dry washes through Saturday. Storms could deliver heavy rain in short bursts, creating dangerous travel conditions across Coconino County.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, rain chances climb to 60 percent by Thursday night and remain elevated through the weekend. Showers and storms may redevelop each afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall expected Friday into Saturday. Gusty winds up to 17 mph and frequent lightning may also complicate travel and outdoor activities.
Residents in Flagstaff, Sedona, and surrounding mountain communities should watch for rapidly changing road conditions, especially along Interstate 17 and U.S. Highway 89. Flash flooding could impact Oak Creek Canyon and other flood-prone corridors. Drivers are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and hikers should steer clear of slot canyons and washes.
Weekend plans may be disrupted as cooler highs in the upper 60s and persistent rainfall linger through Saturday night. Clearing is expected to begin Sunday, with drier weather returning early next week.
Flood watches remain possible as storms continue to develop, and additional advisories could be issued through Saturday evening.
