Flagstaff, Arizona – Drivers across northern Arizona should prepare for slippery roads and changing travel conditions as a two-round winter weather system moves through the region starting today and continuing into Thursday night, bringing accumulating snow to higher elevations and lowering snow levels by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for several mountain regions. The White Mountains are under an advisory from late this morning through Thursday night, while the Chuska Mountains and Black Mesa above 6,500 feet see impacts beginning this evening. The Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau are expected to see snow starting Thursday morning and lasting into the evening hours.
The first round brings scattered rain and snow showers today and tonight, with snow mainly confined above 6,500 feet. A stronger second round arrives Thursday, when colder air allows snow levels to fall toward 5,000 feet, increasing the risk for accumulation near communities such as Flagstaff, Williams, Show Low, and Heber-Overgaard. Portions of I-40, I-17, Highways 87 and 260, and higher mountain passes could become slick, especially during heavier bursts.
Officials urge residents and travelers to winterize vehicles, carry emergency supplies, and check road conditions at AZ511 before heading out. Additional advisories or extensions are possible as the system evolves, and winter travel impacts may linger into Thursday night.
