Flagstaff, Arizona – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of northern Arizona overnight into early Friday, Jan. 9, as light snow continues to impact higher elevations of the Navajo Nation.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the advisory is in effect until 2 a.m. MST Friday, Jan. 9, for areas above 6,500 feet across the Black Mesa area, Chuska Mountains, and Defiance Plateau.
Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch are expected, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. While snowfall totals are relatively light, officials warn that even small amounts of snow can create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on untreated or elevated roadways.
Forecast snowfall amounts from late Thursday night into early Friday morning, Jan. 9, include trace to 1 inch in areas such as Window Rock, Shonto, and Buffalo Pass, with little to no accumulation expected in Ganado.
The advisory includes communities in and around Window Rock, Ganado, and Navajo, New Mexico, where higher-elevation roads may become slick or snow-covered overnight.
Motorists traveling through the region overnight and early Friday are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution on mountain roads. Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions before departure by visiting az511.gov or calling 511.
