Elko, NV – Warmer temperatures in Northern and Central Nevada are set to accelerate snowmelt, raising concerns for local rivers and creeks. The National Weather Service issued a Hydrologic Outlook for the region, noting that near-record warmth expected next week will enhance runoff into area waterways.
According to the NWS, creeks and rivers that typically experience rapid water level rises are likely to be the most affected. Among these are Martin Creek in Humboldt County, the Owyhee River in Elko County, and the Bruneau River in Elko County. The Salmon Falls Creek in Elko County is expected to reach action stage late next week, which is 9 feet, signaling the need for preparedness to mitigate potential flooding. However, the creek is not anticipated to reach minor flood stage, which is 10 feet.
Residents and outdoor enthusiasts are advised to be cautious near swiftly flowing, cold water. Falling into such water can lead to hypothermia quickly, underscoring the importance of safety around affected areas.
