Northern Alaska Winter Weather Advisory: 4–10 Inches of Snow, 50 MPH Winds Thursday Through Friday

Fairbanks, AK – Multiple Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across northern and western Alaska beginning early Thursday through Friday night, as strong winds and widespread snow are forecast to create dangerous travel conditions and near-whiteout visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, affected areas include the Western Brooks Range, Arctic Coast, Seward Peninsula, Kobuk and Noatak Valleys, and the Denali Borough.

  • Western and Arctic Coasts: Snow and blowing snow from 3 a.m. Thursday to 9 p.m. Friday, with gusts near 50 mph and 2–4 inches of snow expected.
  • Brooks Range and Interior Slopes: 4–8 inches of snow and strong winds will continue from Thursday afternoon to early Saturday.
  • Seward Peninsula and Western Interior: 5–10 inches of snow and blowing snow will make travel hazardous through Friday evening.
  • Denali Region: Another system arrives Friday morning, bringing 3–6 inches of snow and gusty winds through early Saturday.

Forecasters warn that visibility could drop to ½ mile or less, particularly in open and high-elevation areas such as Howard Pass, Atigun Pass, and Windy Pass. Motorists and truckers along the Dalton Highway should expect periods of near-zero visibility and drifting snow.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for blowing snow and freezing conditions, and check 511 for current road reports before traveling.
