Fairbanks, AK – Northern Alaska is enduring one of its coldest air masses of the season, with temperatures plunging to -50°F at Birch Creek near Circle Hot Springs on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks.

The reading marks the first -50°F observation east of Circle Hot Springs this winter, with widespread temperatures in the -30°F to -45°F range across much of the Interior and North Slope. Locations such as Umiat, Arctic Village, and Deadhorse all reported temperatures of -40°F or colder.

Forecasters warn that breezy winds are making conditions even more dangerous, producing wind chills as low as -65°F in exposed areas. The NWS expects very cold and dry weather to persist into early this week, with little relief until later in the week.

Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, check vehicles and heating systems, and keep emergency gear on hand in case of breakdowns or power outages.
